E-Komo Mai, Welcome
to Venturing into Hawai'i's Coral Reef

Hawai'i's coral reefs are important to their people. Back in ancient Hawai'i, the Hawaiians thought of coral polyps as the first creature to emerge in creation. In fact, corals were often presented as offerings during religious ceremonies.

Hawai'i's coral reefs are very unique. Hawai'i is about 2,000 miles away from the nearest land mass, that they have created their own unique species that can be found no where else in this world. Because Hawai'i's reefs are so far from other reefs in the Pacific, Hawaiian reef organisms can only breed among members. Over many generations their offspring became unique from those on distant reefs.

Venturing into "Hawai'i's Coral Reef" features some of Hawai'i's native reef animals, and also some fascinating organisms in Hawai'i's coral reefs. Another important goal of our website is to educate children and adults about the threats facing our reefs, so we can all enjoy the beauty of the reefs in the next millennium. Venture into our reef galleries or simply take a stop at our site map, but don't forget to end your adventure at our Discovery Zone.
