The invertebrates in the coral reefs are unique animals without backbones. They play an important role in the reefs' food web. Many invertebrates like the sea urchins are major herbivores (animal that eat plants) on reefs and control the abundance of seaweeds by constantly grazing them off of rocky surfaces. They are animals like corals, sponges, jelly fish, creepy-crawly animals like the sea cucumber and jointed crustaceans such as lobsters and crabs. Some of the invertebrates like the spiny lobster are endemic to Hawai'i. Others like the spanish dancer delight us with its grace and beauty. Then there are those invertebrates that are harmful to the touch.
