The Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) is an important research institute located on Coconut Island in Kane'ohe Bay. This location is ideal because it is just 15 milesfrom the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. It is here that students and scientists from all over the world can come to study about the ocean and coral reefs and their organisms. It is surrounded by 64 acres of coral reef, designated by the State of Hawai'i as the Hawai'i Marine Laboratory Refuge. Kaneohe Bay, located on the island of Oahu, is very unique because all the different types of coral reefs are found there. The reefs and the bay surrounding them are beautiful because they are well cared for by the marine biologists and concerned citizens.
