In 1610, Galileo Galilei, an Italian scientist, was the first to look at Saturn through a telescope. His telescope was handmade, and had small lenses. He also had poor eyesight. When he looked at Saturn through his telescope, he was amazed. He wrote what he saw in his journal. The journal said, “Saturn has Ears.” He thought that Saturn was a big globe with two smaller globes at either side. Two years after his discovery, he looked through his telescope at Saturn and saw that Saturn’s “ears” had disappeared. What Galileo Galilei saw was Saturn’s rings. A Dutch scientist, Christiaan Huygens, discovered this in 1656. He used a bigger and better telescope than Galileo did. He also had better eyesight.
