Studying Stars Star Layers Magnitude The Dippers Closest Stars Star Colors Star Life Temperature HOME    Stars can be observed using many different tools.  There are hundreds of different telescopes.  There are even probes that help with the job.  Probes are large mechanical devices that are used to find things in space.  Some radios are tuned all day to pick up a star’s movement using radio waves.  Even huge telescopes cannot view all stars because some are too far away.  Only strong radio waves can detect (find) these stars.

It is difficult to study the Sun because of its extremely intense heat and light rays. A solar eclipse is a good time to study the Sun’s outer layer, because the Sun’s harmful rays are blocked.  Many scientists go hundreds of feet below ground to study the Sun.  Since it is dark there, they are able to view the Sun more correctly than in broad daylight.
