All turtles lay their eggs on land.  In Florida there are about 16,000 Loggerheads hatched each year. Each Loggerhead nests about four times a year during the April to October season, then migrates hundreds of miles to feed.  When a female lays her eggs, she often lays them where she was born.  She may lay up to 200 eggs at a time.  The female digs a hole in the sand with her back feet.  Then she lays her eggs in a hole and covers them with sand.  The eggs look like large ping-pong balls.  The female walks away after covering the eggs and never returns.  The warmth of the sun hatches the eggs.  The eggs will not hatch if they are in water.  They hatch in about six weeks, if skunks, raccoons, and snakes do not dig up the nests.
