History: 1800's through 1900's

Sometime in the later half of the 1800's - Thaddeus Hyatt suggested a way to reinforce concrete to avoid stress on a beam. His method suggested that a reinforcement be placed near the bottom of a concrete beam and curved up where the supports will hold up the beam.

1870's - A dramatic fall in the price of steel made steel bridges much more popular.

1883 - A monumental bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, was completed.

1884 - Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (who designed the Eiffel Tower) built a great steel arch bridge that overcame many structural problems by letting wind pass through his bridge.

1890 - One of the early modern cantilever bridges was completed. It was designed by Benjamin Baker, an enthusiast of cantilever bridges.
