Six years after finishing the syllabary, Sequoyah and
another man decided to start a newspaper together.
On February 21, 1828, the first Cherokee syllabary newspaper was
published. They named it 'The
Cherokee Phoenix'.
After the Trail of Tears occurred in 1838-1839, the
newspaper was no longer published. Sequoyah
and his partner were split up, and since all the Cherokee were spread out, there was
no one to read it.
