Syllabary Language
Death of Sequoyah
In 1821, Sequoyah had finally finished the language.  It was made of 86 different symbols.  Each one represented a different syllable.  Ah-yoka and Squirrel Boy found this much easier to remember and speak.  The two children practiced by writing out the symbols into simple phrases and sentences.  Squirrel Boy and Ah-yoka learned the language quickly.  It was clear that Sequoyah had finally achieved his goal.  All four memorized the language because it was so easy.  But Sequoyah was not satisfied just calling it "the language".  It needed a name.  So, Ah-yoka suggested calling it 'syllabary.'  This was logical since each symbol stands for one syllable.  Sequoyah thought about this for a short time, and then decided it was a perfect name!
