The medicine men actually were as good as English doctors at the time the English first came.  They could use bark and cure many diseases the English could not.  They knew how to use roots, and many other things of nature, to cure people of diseases that threatened English lives.  Some became English doctors.  There, they learned about some diseases that threatened their lives as Cherokees.
