The Cherokee made many war treaties.  In 1785, the Cherokee negotiated another peace treaty with the United States, but it failed.  In 1791, a new treaty with the United States enabled the United States to take part of the Cherokee’s land.  In return, the United States agreed to not make war with the Cherokee. T he United States wanted the Cherokee land for many reasons.  They wanted it to dig for gold and to settle their people.
