The Cherokee worshipped the Deer God.  They told him, "We only kill what is needed to feed our families, and we are sorry."  They needed to make him happy, so he would let the deer be hunted and killed to feed their families.  If the Deer God got mad, they thought he would make the deer unable to be hunted.
