| When the English came, the priests they had brought with them started missions. The missionaries tried to convert the Cherokee into Christians, which required them to abandon the Cherokee religion. When caught in wrongdoing the missionaries at the missionary boarding schools forced the Cherokee students to memorize a Bible verse. The Bible verse was related to the wrong they did. Cherokee children today learn both English and the Cherokee language in their schools. Some of the Spanish believed that the Cherokee did not deserve to be treated like people. So they did not treat them like people. |
