White
settlers caught “gold fever” when gold was discovered in the southeastern United States (Georgia).
Miners invaded established Cherokee lands and harassed them in
hopes of the Cherokee giving up their land.
The Indians looked to the United States government and courts for
help. However, President Andrew Jackson felt great hostility towards the
Cherokee, and helped force the Cherokee that were in the southeastern U.S.
to move west of the Mississippi River.
White settlers demanded that all Indian tribes be moved. |
