The black widow is the most dangerous spider in the United States. It's poisonous bite can cause illness and severe pain, Deaths have even beenreported. The deaths don't happen from the bite itself. The black widow got it's name, because the female sometimes kills the male after they mate. Scientists believe that only females are dangerous to people.

The female has a shiny black body, and is only about the size of a pea and about 1 1/2 inches including the legs. The under-side of it's abdomen has a red or a yellow mark in the shape of an hour-glass. The male spider is only 1/4 as big as the female. The black widow's web is shapeless, and is made in dark nooks.
