The prettiest part of Comet Bennet was its long, colorful tail.  This beautiful comet was seen 29 years ago.  In 1976, Comet West’s nucleus split into three parts.  The first was on March 8, when it split in two.  It split again on March 14, forming three parts.  The third was on March 18, making four parts.  Encke’s Comet (the comet with the shortest known orbit) moves once around the Sun every 3.3 years, but it has lost so much gas that it is now too faint to be seen without a telescope.
