People used to call comets “long-haired stars” or a “dirty snowball”.  The word “comet” means “hair”.  Some people think that the tail of a comet looks like a fan or a curved sword.  Comets are also called "shooting stars" or "falling stars".  Some books call comets “interplanetary wanderers”.  The head of a comet is a rounded, misty patch in the sky.
