There are many famous comets.  One of the most famous comets is Halley’s Comet.  It is expected to return in 2062.  Halley’s Comet is the brightest of regularly seen comets.  Halley’s Comet becomes visible to the naked eye about every 77 years.  When Halley’s Comet appears, it will come no closer to Earth than 38 million miles!  It takes weeks to move across the sky.  When Halley’s Comet was seen in 1066, it was right before the battle of Hastings.  That same year, William the Conqueror believed that Halley’s Comet was some sort of sign that he would win the battle.  King Harold of England took Halley’s Comet as a bad omen.  He thought that he would not win the forthcoming Battle of Hastings.  The name of a comet is taken from the last name of its discoverer.  The astronomer who calculated Halley’s Comet in 1705 was Edmond Halley.  The comet was named after him after he died.  In 1910, people thought that Halley’s Comet would poison them.  They also believed that Halley’s Comet would make the world come to an end.  Whenever a comet appeared, people would go to their church, pray, and the church bells would ring.  After a comet appears, there always seems to be a war or some kind of disaster, but disasters are always going on!
