Peaceful Attempts
People have many different ways to resolve conflicts. The N.A.A.C.P. showed us one way. They have announced plans for a national tourism boycott to try to pressure the state of South Carolina to take the flag down. They are urging athletes who support removal of the flag not to attend state colleges in South Carolina that supports the flag. The boycott has caused more than 80 groups to cancel meetings and conventions that were scheduled to be held in the state.
Governor Jim Hodges wants the N.A.A.C.P. to hold off the boycott until the state Legislators vote. He plans to privately meet with the lawmakers, business leaders, and university officials to discuss the issue. During the last election, Governor Hodges said he would not actively try to take the Confederate flag down, but he would sign a compromise. One compromise might be to build a memorial on the Capitol ground and put the flag there.
