The Mayor of Hollywood Florida
You may wonder why we choose this topic, or what it
has to do with us. First of all, we're citizens of the United States. We
have the right to care. Of course that's only one of the many reasons. Surprisingly,
we had a controversy concerning of the Confederate Flag in our own state.
Our Thinkquest Junior team heard a rumor that a Confederate Flag was flown
at one time in Young Circle, Hollywood, Florida. We weren't sure if the
rumor was true, so we went to interview the Mayor of Hollywood to confirm
or deny it. Mayor Mara Guilianti answered our questions, and told us what
she knew and her opinions on the issue that is happening in South Carolina.
Below are some "Questions" from us and "Answers" from
the Mayor!
Q- Is it true that a Confederate Flag was flown in Hollywood?
A- Yes it is true that the Confederate Flag was flown in Hollywood. As a matter of fact, it was flown in Young Circle, Hollywood.
Q- Why was it flown?
A- It was flown along Young Circle along with every other flag that had ever flown over Florida in the past.
Q- Why was the flag taken down? Who took it down? When was it taken down?
A- During the 1980s somebody complained about the flag, so the Commission decided to take it down. When she wasn't the Mayor for a year, they decided to put the Confederate Flag back up. The next year, when she was back on the board, she decided to ask the "African American Board," whether they wanted to have the flag up or taken down. They decided to take it down.
Q- What do you think about the Ku Klux Klan?
A-The Ku Klux Klan is a despicable group and is a shame to the nation. I am against all hate groups.
Q-How do you feel about the Confederate Flag? Are people making too big of a deal, out of this issue?
A-It has a historical relic. All the attention isn't necessary for a flag, and it really doesn't matter.
Q-What do you think about flags?
A-I think flags are a really powerful symbol, and that you should think wisely before you put one up.
Q-Do you think the N.A.A.C.P. had the right to boycott tourism?
A- Absolutely! The definitely had the rights to do that. That is what America is all about. I have been a part N.A.A.C.P. and supported them. I think states should take their own charge as a state. Atlanta has given more opportunity to blacks, than any other states.
