| Harriet Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Md., in 1820. Many names were given to Harriet. when she as a little girl people called her Minty and when she was older she was known as Moses from the Bible. Her real name was Araminta. She was born into slavery along with her 10 brothers and sisters. Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913. |

| Harriet grew up as a house servant and was always a big risk-taker. She passed out often because she was beaten so much that it caused brain damage. |

| She escaped at age 25 through the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman freed more than 300 slaves and not one of them was ever captured. Among those saved were her family and parents, Benjamin and Harriet Ross. |

| In 1908, Harriet Tubman opened the John Brown Home for Aged and Indigent Colored People. She also raised money for poor schools. Later, the Harriet Tubman High School was opened. Harriet Tubman lived from 1820 to 1913. |
