Ptolemy

Ptolemy was an Ancient astronomer in AD150. He said that the Earth did not move. He also said that the sun, moon, and planets revolved (orbited) around the Earth. Ptolemy believed the planets were closer to the Earth than the stars. He even said the moon was closer than both the stars and the planets. He also said the earth was round not flat.

His ideas about astronomy were believed until 1543, when Copernicus showed that the Earth moved revolved around the sun. Ptolemy created a map of the world, but the map made the oceans much smaller than they really were and the size of Europe and Asia were larger than they really were.

Columbus used Ptolemy's map to plan his next voyage to the Indies. He thought that the ocean was far smaller than it really is because of Ptolemy's map.
