Women of the Civil War
Up ]

Can you imagine riding on a horse across the battlefield with bullets flying past your head? Believe it or not some woman did this as a job. They would risk their life just to find a hurt person to help. One woman who did that was Clara Barton.

Why They Did What They Did

I know what you are probably thinking. They are crazy! But woman just like Clara Barton who rode through the battlefield loved their jobs so much they risked their own lives. Some woman would risk their lives riding through the battlefield looking for hurt people. When Clara or the other woman found someone they would help them up and put them on the horse, and take them off to where they could get them medical help. The nurses would get straight to work cleaning the wound, covering it with gauze, and making sure that person got plenty of rest. After a few days, maybe more depending on how bad the wound was, the soldiers would be out and a about again. Sometimes, if a soldier were badly hurt (like if they got shot) the woman would dig the bullet out with a knife right there on the battlefield.

The Life of the Woman

When the soldiers were moving the woman followed. The soldiers would lift them over puddles because the women were doing a very important job. If one of them slipped and fell or broke something that is one less nurse.

When the soldiers found the spot were they wanted to be, the first thing they did was set up their tents. The woman would get better shelters than the soldiers would. Some of them were jealous but didn’t say anything because they were thankful to have their laundry.

Conclusion

Women were part of the Civil War too. They weren’t soldiers but they were just as important as soldiers were. They had caring hearts especially Clara Barton. She and the other chose to be nurses in the Civil War. And the most important thing is they all risked their own lives for others.
