True Stories from Civil War Soldiers

Battle of Shiloh

I observed many incidents in the battle of Shiloh. As I’m sitting here writing this for you. I will say some things that might interest you. I remember the first time I ever shot a bullet out of a gun in this battle. It was in first position the bullet came out like a tornado that was unstoppable (of course it's unstoppable).

I observed many incidences in the battle of Shiloh that I didn’t mention at that time. I decided to wait until I had perfect aim of the enemy. When more action joined in soldiers were shooting without direct orders.

The lieutenant was yelling at me telling me to fire but I said there was nothing to fire at, it didn’t help his decision and I had to take commands so I fired not knowing if I shot anyone or not.

I have been using a gun before I was large enough to hold one so I should have better aim. Living like this (as a soldier) is horrible. I wish we could just have peace.

Living in a Hospital Living

Its boring me again, at least that’s what everyone calls me. That’s because I live in a hospital. I’ve been here for years and it’s has been no fun. I don’t get many visitors and I’m always in tremendous pain, having to take medicine or being poked by the doctors. It is a terrifying life to live.

I remember clearly how I came to this hospital. Some of the soldiers were too weak to even march to the battle we were fighting, let alone fight. The horse drawn ambulance came and as they took me away the captain squeezed my hand and said "Goodbye Stillwell, brace up!" I was so weak I could hardly reply back, "Goodbye captain."
