The Merrimack, later named the Virginia, was the world’s only ironclad ship ever made until the Monitor came along. These two ships would meet in the first battle between iron ships ever fought!
Merrimack's DesignThe Merrimack was a Confederate ship. It was originally made out of wood. They cut the masts and covered the outside with two sheets of iron for protection. It was armed with fifteen cannons and a huge ram attached to the to the front of it.
Merrimack is warming up!The Merrimack first attacked the U.S.S. Cumberland. Even when the Cumberland fired at the Merrimack, the cannon balls just harmlessly bounced off the iron ship. Not too long after, the Cumberland sank. The Union was extremely upset about the Cumberland. Not too much later the Monitor came into the world.
The Monitor’s DesignThe Union’s Monitor was covered with iron just like the Merrimack. The deck of the Monitor was barely above sea level. They installed a gun turret that could fire in any direction. Forty-eight patented inventions were on the Monitor as well. This outdid the Merrimack but battle was still to come.
