There were almost 500 battles in the American Civil War. 39 of them were major battles. One battle was called Fort Sumter. This was important because it started the bloodiest war, the American Civil War.
GettysburgThis battle was probably one of the most important because afterwards the South could not fight on Northern ground. This was the bloodiest battle ever fought in the United Sates
AntietamThis battle was considered one of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The South was desperately in need of supplies because the North’s Navy had a blockade so supplies could not get to the south. The South thought that if they could win a battle on north territory the Europeans would offer of help to the South.
Monitor and the MerrimackThe Merrimack was the south’s ship; the Monitor was the north’s ship. They were the first Iron clad ships.
Fort SumterThis battle started the war. It started when the President of the Confederates Jefferson Davis, gave orders to take over Fort Sumter. The north refused. The next day the south attacked.
First Bull RunThis battle was important because it convinced president Lincoln that the battle would not be easily won. It was the first major battle of the Civil War.
PetersburgThis battle was the last major battle of the Civil War. The Union built a 511 feet tunnel to get past the Confederates. It was the longest tunnel ever built in North America. They blew a bomb off at the end of the tunnel. The Union had won the battle after dragging on for nine months.
VicksburgThis battle for the North gave them control of the Mississippi River. And gave the South no control of the river or the battlefield.
ChancellorsvilleThe battle of Chancellorsville was probably the North’s best battle. Because South’s commander was shot by one of his own men. Even though the South won they lost one of their best commanders.
Second Bull RunThe second Bull Run started when General Jackson received a order to force a battle with the Union a battle yet. |
