The first battle of Bull Run was important because it convinced President Lincoln that the War would not be easily won.

The battle started on July 21,1861.It was the first major battle of the Civil War. In that same month General McDowell, The commander of the Union army marched towards Richmond, the capitol of the South, with 28,000 soldiers. He was met at Bull Run Creek by a force of 33,000 Confederates soldiers, which were coming from the north out of Manassas a southern fort.

At the beginning of the battle, the Union soldiers had the Southern soldiers on the retreat, except for one brigade of soldiers commanded by General Jackson. His ability to hold his ground earned him the nick name "Stone Wall" Jackson. Thanks to him the South was able to stay alive until reinforcements came. General Johnston showed up with 9,000 soldiers. 2,900 northern soldiers died 2,000 Southern soldiers died. The South had won the battle. After it the North would hang their heads in shame. While the South would sing" Yankee doodle wheeled about, and scampered of at full run, and such a race was never seen as that he ran at Bull Run.
