The Look of Ancient Egypt

Clothes

The Egyptians wanted clothes that would keep them cool because they lived in the desert and had to work outside in the sun all day. It would get pretty hot! Linen was a nice cool fabric that the Egyptians could make in the desert, so the Egyptians used linen for their clothing. Linen is a type of fabric that comes from flax plant fibers. It was made by soaking flax plant stems in water until only fibers remained. The fibers were combed into fine strands and then spun into string. This string was then woven into linen.

Children did not have to worry about clothes because they didn’t wear any. Women wore a tube dress, a piece of fabric draped around their body with two straps at the top. Men wore a short skirt called a kilt. This kilt was held up with a knot or buckle. As time went on the short kilt became a long kilt.

Hair Styles

Some Egyptians with short hair or no hair wore wigs. They shaved all the hair off their children’s heads except for a little bit on the top, which they braided. They let the braid grow for a long time. They called it " The Lock of Youth." Some people wore wigs with beads and curls to special places, on special days, or when they went to a party. In fact, when you went to a banquet a servant would tie grease in a cone shape to your head and then your wig would smell good. I think it would look like a party hat, don’t you? Even the pharaoh would wear a fake beard on special occasions.

Makeup

Egyptians also used makeup and oils for their bodies. Some Egyptians wore red ochre henna (the powdered leaves of a plant ) on their lips and cheeks to look nice. They even had a special oil so when you went out in the sun your skin wouldn’t burn and crack. Some people wore heavy eye shadow.

To do all this they needed a mirror. Their mirror was a highly polished disk, usually made of bronze. This made the people think of the sun. By the end of the New Kingdom, it was considered a religious item. There were sacred carvings on the backs of the mirrors.

Jewelry

Jewelry was a part of the Egyptian look. Both rich people and poor people wore jewelry. In fact, so did some sacred animals. The only difference was what it was made of. The jewelry the wealthy people wore was made of expensive metals and rare stones. The jewelry the poor people wore was made of faience, a material that looks like glass and is made by heating quartz or sand.
