It was called Pop Art because the subject in the painting was popular. Pop Art is the object or the subject in the painting that is popular; it is not made out of pop cans. Some artist kept repeating the object over and over, or they would make it look like a comic picture.
Pop Art FactsPop Art started in London in the mid-1950's. They called it Propaganda Art instead of Pop Art. This style of art came to the United States in the mid-1960s. Pop Art in the United States was an expression of the optimistic spirit of the 1960's.
Roy Lichtenstein
Lichtenstein was one of the first artists to devople the style pop art. He drew comic like paintings. One of the great pictures he drew was titled "Whaam." It was painted in 1963. You can tell Lichtenstein's paintings because he made dots in the background, and he has thought bubbles in most of his paintings.
Andy Warhol
Warhol was one of the most famous pop artist. He drew pictures and then repeated the object, or person. One of his most famous paintings was called, "Marilyn green, pink, red, and gold." Marilyn Monroe was the most popular person in her time. You can tell his paintings because he made 20 objects of the same thing in 1 painting.
Jasper JohnsWhen Jasper first started drawing he drew the American flag, and his own lithographs series featuring simple images of roman numerals. Then he started to change his ways. One of his famous paintings was called, " Untitled (2) ". It looked like he took paint, splatted it on, then he took a stamp and wrote all of the colors' names.
