Pono's Glossary
Pono learned a lot of different words about Hawai'i and our environment on his journey. This is what they mean.

A

abdomen -the part of the body containing the stomach,intestines,etc.

A'lala - the Hawaiian crow.

alien - from another country or place. Not native.

awareness - knowing something.

B

breeding facility - a place where endangered animals like the Hawaiian Crow can lay eggs and be safe.

C

confirm -prove to be true or correct make certain.

conservation -protecting from lost or being used up avoidance of waste.

eagle - a predatory bird. It is the national symbol of America.

ecosystem - a community of plants and animals interacting with each other and their physical environment.

endangered - in danger of becoming extinct, or dying out.

endangered species - a particular kind of plant or animal that is in danger of extinction.

Endangered Species List - a federal list made by the Environmantal Protection Agency (EPA) that lists all of the endangered plants and animals found in the United States of America.

endemic - found only in that one place on earth.

erosion - the wearing away of soil and rock from the earth's surface through the movement of wind or water.

extinct - there are no members of a plant or animal species left alive.

extinction - the complete disappearance of a plant or animal from the earth.

Federal Endangered Species Act - a law passed by our government that makes it illegal to kill or harm our endangered plants and animals.

fledgling - a young bird that has its feathers and is ready to leave the nest.

folklore - Traditions, beliefs, and stories told in families and cultures.

foreign - coming from a different place. Not native.

habitat - a region where a plant or animal lives.

I

'I'iwi - a rare native bird of Hawai'i with bright red feathers.

illegal - against the law.

increase - to grow larger in numbers or size.

introduced - brought to the islands on purpose.

invertebrate - an animal that doesn't have a backbone, such as snails, insects, and earthworms.

'Io - the Hawaiian hawk.

island - a piece of land surrounded by water.

Kahuli - the rare Hawaiian Tree Snail. The O'ahu Tree Snail is endangered.

Koa - a native hardwood tree of Hawai'i. Its beautiful wood is used for jewelry and furniture.

L

legend - a myth or story handed down from earlier times.

lei - a circular garland of flowers, shells, seeds or feathers worn by Hawaiians.

M

mammal - a class of animals that have fur, breath air, and give birth to live young.

Miconia - an aggressive alien plant that is a serious pest in Hawai'i's native forests.

Moa - an extinct, flightless bird from New Zealand.

N

native - originating, growing or produced in a certain place. One of the original plants or animals in a place.

Nene Goose - the Hawaiian goose. It is the state bird of Hawai'i.

O

ornament - a decoration or piece of jewelry.

ornamental plant - a plant that is used for decoration in gardens.

'Ohi'a - a native tree of Hawai'i with a bright red flower.

O'o - an endemic Hawaiian forest bird that is thought to be extinct.

O'opu - one of five native freshwater fish found in Hawai'i.

'Ope'ape'a - the Hawaiian Hoary Bat.

pest - a plant or animal that is harmful or a nuisance.

pesticide - chemicals used to destroy insects and other living creatures not wanted in a particular area.

pollinate - to fertilize a plant by transfering pollen from one flower to another.

pollute - to change the air, water or land so that it is not healthy for humans and other plants and animals.

population - a number of living things of the same species living in the same general area.

predation - the capturing of prey for food.

predator- an animal that lives by preying on other animals.

preserve - an area set aside that is undisturbed.

rainforest - a dense tropical forest with a high rainfall.

raptor - a predatory bird.

rare - hard to find

refuge - a place of safety

related - Connected by kinship or commmon origin.

released - let go

species - a group of organisms that look like each other and have the same gene structure.

success -a favorable result wished -for ending good fortune.

survival - The act of surviving or lasting, living.

symbol - Something that represents something else by association. A picture that represents something.

threatened - in danger of dying out or becoming extinct.

Threatened Species List - A federal list made by the Environmantal Protection Agency (EPA) that lists all of the plants and animals found in the United States of America that are threatened with extinction.

tropical rainforests - old-growth forests near the Equator that are home to between fifty to ninety percent of the earth's species.
