Another one of Benjamin Franklin’s great inventions was when he put an iron stove pipe leading from the back of the fireplace to outside.  This helped the stove fireplace produce more heat than a regular fireplace, cost less to operate, and was less smoky.  It became very popular.  During Ben Franklin’s time, stoves were used to provide heat for warming rooms.  Today, heating stoves are again becoming popular in the United States and Canada.

The wood burning stoves before Franklin’s time polluted the air.  Most wood burning stoves were made of heavy iron or steel.  Some stoves had air vents to control the draft.  The draft allowed the stove to burn more efficiently than an open fireplace could.  When the stove became hot, it held the heat better than a fireplace.  Franklin’s stove did not pollute the air inside the house and was more efficient.

Benjamin Franklin also invented the "Franklin Stoves" in the 1740’s.  They had doors in the front so they could work as a stove or a fireplace.  Inserts were used as little stoves that fit into the fireplace for cooking.  Today’s stoves, that are run with either gas or electricity, work much better.
