At the same time Thomas Edison was working on the phonograph, he developed the kinetograph (the motion picture camera) and the kientoskope (the movie projector).  A movie camera is like a still camera, except it takes a lot of pictures each second.  A motion picture camera is something that records a series of images on film or tape.  The film is in a strip so it can be run through a projector very fast to make a motion picture appear.  The camera is designed to run almost without noise so you can record sounds without hearing the camera running.  The projector was just a small box with the motion-picture projected inside.  The picture was seen through a tiny eyehole on top of the box.  The motion picture camera is one of the most popular forms of art throughout the world.
