Benjamin Franklin was a famous inventor.  He invented many great things like bifocals, a wood stove, swim fins, and many other great and important things.

Ben was born on January 6, 1706.  When Ben was 4, he already knew how to read very well.  He also knew then that he wanted to go to school, but his father didn’t want him to.  If he went to school later on, he would be the first one in his family to go to school.  Benjamin learned different languages much quicker than his classmates did in grammar school.  When Ben was a little kid he also loved to explore his neighborhood.

His Inventions When He Was Little

When Benjamin was little, he invented many things.  The first thing he invented was the "skipping stones".  He put some big rocks at the shallow end of the river and showed all the boys in the neighborhood how to cross without getting wet.  The second thing that Ben invented was "the kite", which was a way to help you move down the river.  The way it worked was, as you lay in the river and held onto the kite, the wind would help you float down the river.

Ben’s Inventions as He Grew Older

Benjamin Franklin’s ideas almost always turned into inventions like the time he invented a way to lock his door.  He hung a cord at the head of his bed so when Ben wanted to lock his door at night he just had to pull the cord.  Then an iron bolt would slide through a hole in the door and lock it.  Then all Ben had to do was roll over and shut his eyes.  Ben loved to invent new things.  Once, he invented a chair that folded into a stepladder stool.  They thought it worked great, and they used it a lot.

Ben also made a rocking chair with a fan over top of it, and when you rocked, the fan would fan you.  It was good for three reasons.  It would keep the flies away from your head, would cool you off on a hot day, and was relaxing to sit and rock. Ben kept inventing.  When Ben was young and small he also made a pole fixed with fingers at the top so that when he wanted to get a book from a high shelf, he used the pole to reach it.  Once, Ben needed to figure out how to turn the meat roaster, so he cut a hole in the kitchen wall and attached a windmill to it so that when the wind blew outside, it would turn the roaster.  It really worked!
