Transportation

There were four ways the Ancient Egyptians got around.  They got around on chariots, donkeys, boats, and camels.

Not very many people owned boats because there was only one place a boat could go - the Nile River.  Not only that but you usually had to build them yourself or buy them.  Their boats were a little bit smaller than a sailboat and they were made out of straw.  Egyptians moved their boats with oars.

The fastest way to get around was on a chariot.  Usually men would stand in the chariot, which was like a small open carriage pulled by one or two horses.  A chariot could go about 25 miles per hour.  The horses were controlled and steered by reins.  Reins are like a belt that were tied on the horses’ necks.  Chariots were used mostly for battles or wars.  The battle warrior would be holding reins in one hand and in the other hand would be a spear.  Very few people had a chariot because they didn’t need one.  Egyptians only needed chariots if they were in a hurry.  We know so much about chariots because Howard Carter found a chariot in King Tut's tomb.

The animal that most Egyptians owned or rented was a camel.  The Egyptians wanted camels because they could go a long way without water, food, and rests.  Plus they could carry heavy loads on their backs.  It was so important that camels could go a long way without water, because there was not a lot of water or food in the deserts where the Egyptians lived.

Now donkeys, on the other hand, need to be fed every single day.  They also could not go a long way on journeys like camels could.  You usually wouldn’t take donkeys on long journeys because they would need to get water and food.  A few Egyptians wanted donkeys because they could go in town and the person would get their monthly supplies and put them on the donkey’s back because they were not that heavy.

There is only one way to know what it was like to use the transportation used by Ancient Egyptians.  Just close your eyes and think that you’re in a chariot, on a camel, in a boat, or on a donkey.  The reason we know so much about Egyptian transportation is because Howard Carter found a lot of really great clues to how the Ancient Egyptians lived in King Tut’s tomb.
