Long, long ago way back when Ancient Egyptians were around, there was a pyramid or a statue of an animal called the Great Sphinx. The name "sphinx," which means "strangler," was first given by the Greeks to a cool creature. This creature had the head of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of a bird.
The Egyptian Sphinx has the head of a human and body of a lion. People say that the Sphinx Pyramid knows all! Why it was built is a mystery. People say that the Sphinx pyramid holds buried secrets. Others say it drives away evil spirits. One story says that when Tutmouse, was a prince, he went hunting and fell asleep in the shade of the Sphinx. During a dream, the Sphinx spoke to Tutmouse and told him to clear away the sand because it was choking the Sphinx. The Sphinx told him that if he did this, he would be rewarded with becoming a king. Tutmouse carried out this request and the Sphinx held up his end of the deal. Some say that it was built after the pyramid Cheperen was complete. It may have been built as a sort of scarecrow to guard Chepren's tomb. Still others say it is his guardian deity, rather than Cheperen himself. There are many different stories about the Sphinx. We may never know why it was really built. |
