Nut was one of the last and first goddesses of Heliopolis.
Nut
was the last goddess of the daytime sky. Her parents were Shu, the god of
the air, and Tufnut. She was the goddess of the daytime sky and the place clouds
form. She later became the goddess of the whole sky. Mainly she is shown as a
woman whose hands and feet touch the ground so that her body forms half a
circle. She represents the heavens. Her arms and legs represent the four pillars
that hold up the sky. Her husband Geb lies on the ground laying on one elbow
with his knees in the air. It was said that when Shu raised Nut above Geb he
brought an end to chaos and if he ever left his position chaos would come back.
She had four children with Geb, Osiris and his wife Isis, and Seth and his wife
Nepthes. They were born on five holidays of the year. Every year these days were
celebrated all through Egypt.
These holidays are:
Osiris: This day was considered unlucky.
Horus: This day was described as either lucky or
unlucky.
Seth: This was considered the unlucky day.
Isis: This was considered the lucky day called "a
beautiful festival of heaven and earth."
