The New Kingdom was the time that Egypt had the world’s strongest power and was made up of the tan area on the map below. The New Kingdom started in 1554 B.C. and went on for 500 years.
Amon was the god worshiped the most in Thebes during the New Kingdom. After King Amenhotep, came to the throne in 1367B.C., he gave himself to a sun god called King Aton. Amenhotep changed his name to Akhenaton and said that the god of Aton had taken the place of Amon and all of the other gods except for Re. He thought that Re was god of the sunlight. Since this made many Egyptians mad, King Tutankhaton removed the name Aton from Akhenaton’s name and made it Tutankhamen. Tutankhaton restored the state religion, allowing people to worship the old deities and King Aton. Amenhotep III built a temple in Luxor and put put the famous pair of colossal statues. They were called the Colossi of Memnor. Ramses II also finished the great hall of El Karnak and set up statues of himself. During the New Kingdom he also had his name carved on monuments, so he would become better known as a king. Ancient Egypt started to lose it’s power during the New Kingdom. Priests and nobles broke Egypt into small states. That was when Egypt lost territories and its little power attracted a lot of enemies. |
