Food

The Egyptians’ main source of food was mostly bread.  Egyptologists know this from the dome shaped ovens with traces of bread in them.  The ovens also had small pieces of stone that looked like sand.  The reason for this is that the wheat used to make bread was crushed with stones.  The stones broke off into tiny pieces that weren’t noticeable, so there was a lot of grit in the bread.  Grit is very small pieces of stone that can damage teeth.  That is why many ancient Egyptians didn’t have very clean teeth.  Bread was cooked in the dome shaped ovens that were made out of clay.  The bread might have been placed in the middle or the sides of the insides of the oven. A dome shaped oven would have been placed over an open fire.

Traces of beer in containers show that Ancient Egyptians loved beer.  There are also pictures on temple walls of peasants drinking beer.  It was practically their favorite drink.  The Egyptians would make beer by taking half-baked loaves of barley that they made, and they would crumble the loaves into water to make water and barley.  Then they let this mixture sit in a sealed container.  There were still lumps of barley in the beer, so they strained them out.

Evidence like wine vessels and large buckets, which were dug up by scientists, show that wine was also a popular drink.   Though there are no pictures on temple walls, we know wine was not made the same way as beer today.  The first step was to crush grapes to get the juice out of it.  They do this in a large bucket-type thing called a trough.  One trough could hold six men.  Then it was sealed in a clay jar with the vineyard’s name carved on the lid.  After it was done sitting, you would be able to drink it.

Fruits like grapes, figs, plums, and watermelons were grown in Egypt.  The Ancient Egyptians also grew vegetables like beets, sweet onions, dates, radishes, turnips, garlic, lettuce, chickpeas, beans, and lentils.

Animal bones found in Egypt show that the Egyptians ate a lot of unusual meats.  This included things like fish (perch, catfish, and eel) which they got from the Nile riverbanks, birds (fowl, crane, and stork) that were shot with bows, and game like hyenas.
