Amon was known as god of the city Thebes for a long time.  He was in many different forms.  At different times he was in the form of a human, goose, bull, or a ram.

Amon was said to have meant, "what is hidden," "what is not seen," and "what cannot be seen."  The Egyptians thought the god Thoth formed Amon.

Amon was usually worshiped in a place called Hermopolis.  For a long period of time he was only known locally as an important creation deity.  Though soon when the 12th Dynasty (a kingdom ruled by a single generation) took over various parts of the country, Amon’s name spread throughout Egypt.  It was at that time that the kingdom tried to make Amon "king of the gods."

Though Amon didn’t become king of the gods, Amon soon became very popular in Egypt.  He soon became what is known as the vizier of the poor.  It was said that he protected the weak from the strong, upheld the laws of Egypt, and was a goodie two shoes.  If you wanted a favor from Amon you had to prove your worth, or confess your sins to him.

With his powers of being a god, he was not very popular with the pharaohs, because they were jealous of Amon’s powers.  As Amon grew more popular, his high priest became rich and influential. The woman Pharaoh Hatsepsut claimed that Amon was her dad. Her servants believed her and put up a temple is Amon’s honor. The location of the temple was said to be in a place called Deir el-Bahu.

Soon some bad moves on Amon’s part sent him flying off the popularity chart like migrating birds.  After Aten was made god of the pharaohs, Amon’s name was erased from everyone’s lives.
