Aker was an ancient earth god. He was believed to guard the
gates where the sun came up every morning. Aker looked like a double headed lion
or two The two lions were called Sef and Duau, which means yesterday and today. The Egyptians sometimes would place statues of the lions at the doors of their palaces and tombs. This was to guard the household and tombs from evil spirits and bad people. A couple of times they gave the statues either a head of a man or woman. These statues were known as Sphinxes. |
