Wilbur Wright was born on April 16,
1867. It was on a farm that was 8 miles away from New Castle, Indiana. Orville
Wright was born on August 19, 1897 in Dayton, Ohio. When Orville was born their
father worked for the United Brethren Church.
When Wilbur was 21 and Orville was 17, the brothers invented and made one of the first successful airplanes on December 17, 1903. The brothers made the first ever flight in a power-driven (handled by the brothers) heavier than air (weighs a lot) machine. It was near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, which is a place full of sand dunes. The plane was made of wood, metal and steel. It had up to 25 steel poles to hold up the wings and the bow of the plane. The bottoms of the bottom wings were metal and the tops of the top wings were metal. The top of the bottom wings were made of wood and the bottom of the top wings were made of wood.
When Orville flew the Wrights’ control plane the plane flew 120 feet in just 12 seconds. The longest flight was by Wilbur. He flew the plane 852 feet in just 1 minute and 2 seconds.
Besides the Wright Brothers, four men and one boy saw their flights. One of the men got a photograph of the plane just as Orville took off. Only a few newspapers mentioned the flights, and what they said was not correct information.
After that the Wright brothers continued to fly in a pasture near their hometown, Dayton, Ohio. The local newspapers didn’t care at all and did not report this great event.
The Wright brothers made a statement about their achievement to the press in January of 1904. Orville and Wilbur only got a little bit of attention for it, though.
A man named Octave Chanute who was an American civil engineer reported their success in an article for the magazine, "Popular Science Monthly" in March of 1904.
One of the first eyewitness stories of a flight by the Wright brothers was in a magazine called "Gleanings in Bee Culture" in January of 1905.
Wilbur Wright died on May 30, 1912 because of typhoid fever at the age of 45. Orville Wright on January 30, 1948 because of a heart attack at the age of 70.
The reason airplanes are so important is because it makes transportation a lot easier so you do not get caught in traffic. Also, so you can get wherever you want to in a lot less time then it would take traveling in a car or on a motorcycle. The Wright brothers achievements are so important today because modern planes would not be possible without Wright the brothers’ inventions.
