The Model T

Henry Ford was the man who built the Model T. The Model T was known as the "Tin Lizzy" or the "Flivver" and became an American symbol that America can be proud of.

The Model T was built by the Ford Motor Company from 1909-1927. More than 1 million Model T’s were built in Detroit and Highland Park, Michigan. The assembly line allowed the car price to be lowered from $850 in 1909 to less than $300 in 1925. The price got lowered because the company could make them faster and cheaper. At such low prices, the Model T’s at times made up almost all of the cars made and sold in the United States.

The Model T looked a lot like a carriage. It looked like a convertible but it had no roof. It had a tire on the side. You couldn’t use the tire because it was just for looks. The Model T was offered in several bodies and styles and included the parts the Model T needed. It had two seats in the front of the car and in the back. It had a bucket on the side of the car that could be used to put a fire out. Most models that were built didn’t have the gas tanks on the side of the cars. They had it under the driver’s seat.

There was a crank in the front of the Model T that could start the car. Before 1920 people had to crank the Model T to start the engine. A hand crank at the front of the car started the engine. In 1920 they began producing them with battery-powered starters. The top speed of the Model T is about 40 to 45 miles per hour. The Model T had more power in reverse so it could go up steep hills in reverse.
