Following Pascal’s invention of the
adding machine, it was not until the year 1833 when Charles Babbage’s invented
the Analytical engine the word analytical comes from the same Latin word as
analysis. The word analytical means problem solving.
Born in the year 1791 Charles Babbage was an
English Babbage’s second invention was called the Difference Engine. In 1822 Babbage talked to the British government to ask if they could pay for his design that would calculate better than Pascal’s Invention. Babbage’s Difference Engine was full of levers. If carried to full completion this tool would be able to print out results automatically. After 10 years of effort, Babbage quit his machine and began to work on a better project, a general-purpose computer. Babbage’s next project was his most important, the Analytical Engine. Babbage was again allowed to barrow money from the British Government. This machine revolutionized how people calculated. The Analytical Engine borrowed the idea to use punch codes to print calculating results. A punch code is sort of like Braille, using little dots as a code. Surprisingly it was supposed to print results anyway. Babbage’s Analytical Engine was used in homes, and was a better and more accurate way to calculate in the early stages of calculating. |
