The Sun

The Sun is categorized in many different legends. The Ancient Greeks called it Helios. The Sun's name came from Romans who called it Sol.

The Sun is a star, NOT a planet. It is the only star that can be seen in daytime. If you could hold the Earth and the Sun, you could fit more than one million Earths inside of it. The Sun's center is fifteen million degrees Celsius. That is so hot that if you got so far as a kilometer from it, the heat would fry you!!

The Sun's surface is called the photosphere. At the photosphere, there is three hundred eighty six billion megawatts of energy. That could light MILLIONS and MILLIONS of light bulbs, all at one time!!

If we didn't have the Sun, life on Earth wouldn't be possible. Do you know why? It's because the Sun provides light and heat on Earth. As you know, "heat" is a very important part of our environment. We use heat to grow plants, keep warm, and to give us a tan. If we didn't have it we would probably starve and freeze to death.

The Sun appears to be a yellowish, golden disk in daytime. The Sun looks like an ordinary star at night. The Sun is a mediocre star. Also classified as a yellow dwarf star, the Sun, as far as we know, is a single star system.

I don't know about you, but I think that the Sun is COOL! The Sun is full of interesting facts and I hope that you enjoyed this part of "Take a Bite Out Of the Milky Way."
