Mars' rocky surface is the only planet's surface that can be seen from Earth. Mars was named after the Roman God of War because of its red surface color. At first, Mars was the god of fertility and farmland.There is no proof that life lives on Mars now, but there is some proof on its surface that it once had creatures living on it.

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. The planet is 141.6 million miles away from the Sun at the most. Its average distance from Earth is 3.5 million miles. Its diameter is 4,223 miles, which is smaller than Earth. Mars is actually the third smallest planet .

Mars has many moons. Phobos, one of the moons, is five-thousand, eight-hundred and thirty miles away from the planet Mars. The diameter is only seventeen miles. Deimos, another one of the moons, is fourteen-thousand, five-hundred and eighty miles from Mars and the diameter is only ten miles.

The length of day is very similar to Earth. To be exact, the length is twenty-four hours, thirty-seven minutes, and twenty-three seconds.

The atmosphere is mainly composed of carbon dioxide. It also constists of nitrogen, argon, oxygen, and water vapor.

The lowest temperature ever recorded on Mars was -191 degrees farenhieght. The highest was -24 degrees.
