Mars' rocky surface is
the only planet's surface that can be seen from Earth. Mars
was named after the Roman God of War because of its red
surface color. At first, Mars was the god of fertility and
farmland. There is no proof that life lives on Mars now, but
there is some proof on its surface that it once had
creatures living on it. Mars is the fourth planet
from the Sun. The planet is 141.6 million miles away from
the Sun at the most. Its average distance from Earth is 3.5
million miles. Its diameter is 4,223 miles, which is smaller
than Earth. Mars is actually the third smallest planet .
Mars has many moons.
Phobos, one of the moons, is five-thousand, eight-hundred
and thirty miles away from the planet Mars. The diameter is
only seventeen miles. Deimos, another one of the moons, is
fourteen-thousand, five-hundred and eighty miles from Mars
and the diameter is only ten miles. The length of day is very
similar to Earth. To be exact, the length is twenty-four
hours, thirty-seven minutes, and twenty-three
seconds. The atmosphere is mainly
composed of carbon dioxide. It also constists of nitrogen,
argon, oxygen, and water vapor. The lowest temperature
ever recorded on Mars was -191 degrees farenhieght. The
highest was -24 degrees.
