stained glass Stained glass is a term used to describe windows composed of colored glass set in design. The process of coloring glass was probably invented in ancient Egypt. The technique of creating stained glass came from making cloisonné jewelry and mosaics. When the war hit in Europe in the 1930's stained glass windows were taken apart and stored in safe places. After the war, the windows were carefully put back together. The Sainte Chapel in Paris built in 1243-48 contains 15 enormous windows with 1134 narrative scenes. The reason windows were made with scenes is because many people could not read at this time. The windows told them important stories. The Gothic Age produced the great cathedrals of Europe and brought a full flowering of stained glass windows. Stained glass can be put in many things including jewelry, windows and lamps.
