Most young children enjoy going to the beach. However, many accidents and injuries occur around water areas. When you go to the beach, there are a few safety rules you must follow.
The most important thing to do is to learn how to swim!
Always swim with a friend so your friend can get help if you're in trouble.
Say "no" if you don't feel safe about doing something. Sometimes friends might dare you to do things that are not safe.
Make sure you can get back to shore on your own. Flotation devices are not always reliable.
Don't touch sea urchins. Even though they are pretty, they can sting you.
Only swim at beaches where there are lifeguards. Lifeguards now have better equipment and training to rescue you when you're in trouble.
Never turn your back to the ocean. Big waves can hit you when you are not looking.
Know the ocean conditions before you go into the water. Spend some time observing the surf and currents.
Rip currents are very dangerous. If you are stuck in a rip current stay calm. You should never try to fight the current. By swimming against it you will use up all of your energy and get tired. Wait until the current releases you then swim parallel back to shore.
Another thing you should not do is dive into the water where it's shallow or rocky because you can hit your head. If you surf or boogie board you need to be extremely careful. If you hit your head on the ocean floor you can break your neck and become paralyzed.
