My hypothesis is that I hope to prove that four cups of water with varying amounts of salt will all freeze at different temperatures and that some might not even freeze.
I will also add a variable to my experiment. My variable will be the amount of salt I add to each glass of water.
Everything else will be a control. The size of the glass, the type of thermometer, the amount of water in each glass, and the time left in the refrigerator will not change.
-Four submersible thermometers that can go to below zero
-Four glasses
-32 ounces of water
-Regular salt
-A freezer
-A notebook to record your information
To do this experiment you need to have the items I listed above.
1. You first need to fill four glasses of water with 8 ounces of water each.
2. Put nothing else in one cup. The reason you do not put salt in this one is that it is the one you are going to keep as the neutral (control) glass.
3. Put half a cup of salt in the second glass.
4. Put one fourth of a cup of salt in the third glass.
5. Put one eighth of a cup of salt in the fourth glass.
6. After you have done that you should put one thermometer in each glass.
7. Record the temperature of the water in each glass.
8. Put each glass in the freezer at the same time.
9. Record the temperature of each glass every 30 minutes until all are frozen.
1. At 30 minutes the glasses had iced over a little bit and the water started to get a little cooler in temperature.
2. At 60 minutes the glass of just water had frozen completely. The glass with 1/4 of a cup of salt and the glass with 1/8 of a cup of salt had become slushy but were not completely frozen. The glass with a half a cup of salt was not close to even beginning to start freezing.
3. At 8 + hours the temperature of the water or ice in all of the glasses was below zero, but the water in only three of the glasses was frozen. I think that the glass with a half of a cup of salt should have frozen like the others, but it didn't.
