Algae Vacuum

The Plecostomus  is a long time aquarium favorite. Why most aquarists like it is because it eats algae, by sucking plants, decorations, and the glass. It "sucks" these objects by using its strong downward mouth.
This fish is long and plump. It has a dark brown body. Bony plates occur all over their body except under their belly. The have small eyes that "blink", as in roll in and then out.
They are often know as a pleco, or pl*co. Some people spell it this way because if you spell it correctly it is said that you pleco will soon die. I do not know of any truth in this!

Tank setup

With this fish you need a mediums size tank. It should be furnished with plants, driftwood, hiding places. Plecos like to rest on driftwood or in hiding places. When older these fish aren't very active.

Feeding

Plecos eat algae from the tank. That does not mean that is the only food source they need, They need algae wafers to supply them with additional algae. As they get older they will eat less algae and need to be feed sinking herbivorous food.

Tank Mates

Idea tank mates would be almost anything that will not bother them. They get along well with most tetras, barbs, danios, cichlids, and other catfish. With more fancy varieties of plecos you may not be able to keep two fancy plecos in one tank.
