Dragon Fish

Arowanas are smaller relatives of A. Gigas. They are sometimes imported young from South America. Small 3-4" normally sell for about $25. Larger ones can go for over a hundred dollars. They can grow over 2 feet and eat like a whole army. They are said to be related to prehistoric fish.

Tank setup

Young Arowanas are normally peaceful. Older ones get more aggressive . In a spacious tank they will show off there beauty and grace. These are true bony fish. They like tanks with sandy bottoms and a few hardy plants. They swim at the top so it is suggested that you leave swimming room at the top of the tank. These fish are excellent jumpers, so the tank should have a tight lid.

Feeding

In their natural habitat of the Amazon basin they leap out of the water to catch small animals and insects on low branches. In the aquarium it is suggested that you feed these fish beef heart, large live fish, or a meaty food. You should also allow for periods of fasting each week.

Tank Mates

Idea tank mates would be other large catfish, large fish like pacus, and any thing that isn't a top layer fish and a small one.
